Focus and Itinerary
This Winterim is focused on photographing and writing about travel through Scotland, interacting with local folks, and enjoying the spellbinding scenery. To that end, I have hired a professional photographer to workshop with our students for three days in the Scottish Highlands, and I have also enlisted two local guides to bring us to locales that are ripe for photography.
Our rough itinerary is as follows:
Sunday the 25th: Arrive in Edinburgh, meet up with our tour guide from Local Eyes Tours to walk through Edinburgh Castle.
Monday the 26th: A morning walking tour of Edinburgh's Old City with Local Eyes. An afternoon trip to Camera Obscura, an optical illusion museum with a great photo deck on the roof. A visit to Princes Street and Edinburgh's shopping district.
Tuesday the 27th: A full day driving tour with Local Eyes, heading eastwards along the Firth of Forth, visiting a few castles and stopping in the fishing village of North Berwick.
Wednesday the 28th: A full day driving tour with Local Eyes, heading into the lower portion of the Highlands to Stirling Castle, Bannockburn Battlefield, and several other sights.
Thursday the 1st: Renting our vans and driving northwest to the town of Oban via Luss, a small village on the shores of Loch Lomond. A sunset walk up to McCaig's Tower in Oban for photos of the sunset and the town at night.
Friday the 2nd: Photo shoots in and around Oban (Dunstaffnage Castle, Ardchattan Priory, the Corran Esplanade).
Saturday the 3rd: Heading north towards the Isle of Skye via Glen Coe. Meeting up with Tom from Land of Light Photography to have our first day's workshop.
Sunday the 4th: exploring and shooting the Isle of Skye with Tom all day (from before sunrise until after sunset).
Monday the 5th: driving northeast to Inverness. Meeting up with a guide from Happy Tours for a walking tour of Inverness.
Tuesday the 6th: A full day driving tour with Happy Tours. An afternoon cruise on Loch Ness and a visit to Culloden Battlefield.
Wednesday the 7th: Meeting up with Tom from Land of Light Photography for our third workshop. Shooting in the Cairngorm Mountains. Continuing to St. Andrews.
Thursday the 8th: Walking St. Andrews (The Old Course, St. Andrews Castle, St. Andrews Cathedral). If time, a drive to Pitlochry for some additional photos.
Friday the 9th: Getting up before the sun to drive back to Edinburgh Airport to fly back to Connecticut!
