Forman Winterim - Scotland: Travel Photography and Journalism

Hi my name is Julia Graef. Im 16 years old and I live in Boca Raton, Florida. I am a sophomore in Chase dorm. This is my second  year at Forman and I came as a mid   year last January. I chose to go on the winterim trip to Scotland because I really wanted to explore other places outside of the United States. I also joined because I really enjoy taking photos and writing. Today is our last day in Scotland and we are currently staying in St. Andrews. Todays was more of a relaxed day since we are preparing to leave tomorrow. We went into the town in St. Andrews in the afternoon to eat lunch and scope out the places that we would want to go to after visiting the different sites.   Hi I'm Celia Tucker (the one in the red that's not julia), I live in NY and I am 15 years old. I came to Forman last January as a mid- year so i have been at Forman for 1 1/2 years.  I am in Cedars dorm. I decided to come to Scotland because i thought that the architecture and history was interesting. Today we drove down to St.Andrews. We stopped along the way at many different locations. The first location we stopped at was Loch Morlich, where we saw a lot of ducks. We started taking photos and then we split up into groups of four to work with Tom the photographer. Once in these groups he started to talk to us about manual setting and about how to change them because we were directly in the sun and the snow was reflecting the sun making it even brighter and how it would have been overexposed if didn't change them. My name is Justin.   I chose to go on the Winterim trip to Scotland because I thought I would enjoy the country since it is similar to the weather in New England. But I also went on this trip because I do have a secret love for photography and taking photos of nature and photographing things that I find beautiful or stunning. I have been given small crash courses on how to use a DSLR camera for my swim team at Avon last year and had produced some good photos for the team when I took photos so I thought why not give this Winterim a shot. Our tour guide today took us to around too see Clava Cairns, an ancient burial ground that is also very famous because of the show and book Outlander . And then after visiting this burial ground we went and visited Culloden Battlefield where there was a battle for the crown of Scotland to put Bonnie Prince Charlie on the throne. I’m Louise. I’m 15 and a sophomore at Forman School. I chose the Scotland Winterim because I've always heard by my artistic mother that Scotland is one of the most beautiful places in the world.   Today we left the hotel fully packed bright and early! We were in the cars and on our way as early as 7:15. Our first stop was what was meant to be our sunrise shoot at River Sligachan. Though it was not quite a sunrise it was a stunning light that fell on the stones, water and mountains. I'm Olivia. I'm from Danbury CT, I'm 15 years old and a sophomore. I live in Lewis Dorm. I've been at Forman for 2 years. I chose to do Scotland as my Winterim because I've always wanted to go and it sounded like a fun and interesting experience.   Today we had our first full day in the Island of Skye. To start off the day we went to The Quiraing and hiked up for a while and got beautiful shots of the mountains. We had our photography instructors with us and we learned about different shutter speeds, and how to use a tripod. We also stopped to take pictures at Kilt Rock Falls and Lock Fada to get shots of The Storr.  Then we went back to walk on the harbor and got a bunch of pictures of the water with sailboats and colorful houses in the background. My name is Tom Troy. I’m 18 years old and a senior. I chose to go on the Scotland Winterim because this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity. I also consider myself a golf fan and I wanted to visit the famous golf course at St. Andrews. Also Scotland is great place to visit for my first time out of the country.    Today we were finally able to leave Edinburgh and pick up our rental cars. The car drive to the Isle of Skye was about 6 hours. We had a couple stops on the way where we took pictures of the beautiful mountains. We stopped in Glen Coe where we took pictures of three mountains called the Three Sisters. You were able to see if you looked closely up on the mountain people were climbing a frozen waterfall. The view from the car ride was beautiful with the hills and mountains and lochs. We took pictures of the Achnambeithach Cottage a very well known house in Glen Coe. Hi, and thanks for keeping up with the blog!  We've had two days of spotty internet, but hope to have our new blog posts up soon!

In Scotland, March 1st is typically considered to be the first day of spring.  However, with the storm gripping the entire United Kingdom and Ireland, winter was still in full force.  Our car rental agency was closed, and we thankfully could not drive out of the city, as many of the motorways were gridlocked and people were sleeping in their cars on the road.  Today, we had a quiet morning, and the afternoon was spent shopping in Grassmarket (per request), as none of the museums or historical sites in the city were open.  Tomorrow, we expect to have a bit more mobility, but we will still be in Edinburgh as the driving will still be unsafe. -Mr. Bender

This morning we woke up to a very snowy and a cold Edinburgh morning. Unfortunately we had plans to go see the Highlands today but that got canceled due to the snow. So our new plan was to walk through Edinburgh with our tour guide. We walked around the streets of Edinburgh in the windy weather and we saw some very interesting things. We saw many statues of people that were in Edinburgh’s history, for example Abraham Lincoln and John Knox. John Knox was the founder of Presbyterianism and was very anti-Catholic. Abraham Lincoln's statue was built in commemoration of six men from Edinburgh who went to America to fight slavery in the Civil War. We went inside a big church called St.Giles Cathedral. It was a beautiful church that was worth seeing. We went up Calton Hill which had view of the city centre and the sea. We took many pictures and saw the different sides of the city. We then walked down Calton Hill and walked on the other side of town. We walked right past the Scottis...
